What is The DV Lottery Program (Green Card)
The DV Lottery Program is one of the most popular immigration programs in the USA. Each year, the U.S. State Department opens registration for the DV Lottery. From October 3rd to November 6th, the registration period will open, allowing millions of people the chance to win a US Green Card.
A computer program is used to randomly select candidates. As soon as 55,000 people are selected to apply for a Green Card, the quota is filled until the following year, when the DV Lottery registration opens up again.
Why Did the U.S Create the DV Lottery Program
The DV Lottery program went through some tweaking over the years. Starting in 1986, the U.S established new temporary visa programs that were completely separate from the original immigration categories. These were known as the NP-5, OP-1, and the AA-1. Each of these programs allowed different groups of immigrants to relocate to the USA.
In 1990, the U.S passed the new Immigration Act which allowed to establish the DV Lottery Program, or Green Card Lottery, as we know it today. By 1995, the DV Lottery became a permanent staple among the U.S immigration programs.
The DV Lottery Program aims to diversify the immigrant population in the U.S. by choosing applicants from countries with low immigration to the U.S. over the last 5 years. Individuals and families who are eligible to participate in the DV Lottery Program may submit their information for a chance to apply for a US Green Card.
HOW MANY PEOPLE ACTUALLY WIN THE GREEN CARD LOTTERY
The Green Card quota for applicants is 55,000 visas. However, the actual number of lottery winners may reach 100,000!
How does this happen? Why is the number of winners higher than the number of available visas?
Well, history has shown that almost half of all lottery winners fail to qualify for their Green Cards. They might fail in completing the documentation process, in passing the Secular Interview, or choose to give up their win.
So, in order to fill out the quota of 55,000 Green Card winners, the lottery quota was set to 100,000 entrants.
